The book ends on a cliffhanger and I do want to continue the series.A suburban Virginia divorcée struggles with that classic dilemma: What should she do when she’s offered a fat paycheck to kill a complete stranger? It was a bit random but I liked that the author did something different. Things like that definitely do happen with dating. There IS a final twist with Julian, but it’s just that Finlay recognizes that she really feels a more genuine connection with him than Nick and decides to romantically pursue him. I thought that was kind of strange and I kept thinking that there would be a final twist with Julian where he was revealed to be involved with the mob. He is initially introduced as a love interest but then disappears in favor of Nick, the attractive cop. With the hot young bartender, Julian, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. I also thought that the way the book handled Findlay’s love life was unique and interesting. There were also a lot of meta aspects of the book with Finn’s book within the book that were amusing. I that type of humor can be hard to covey in a book but the author did a great job. It reminded me a bit of comedies like The Whole Nine Yards. Notably Finn accidentally killing her first mark, Vero’s unabashed enthusiasm at the prospect of being a hit man, Finn’s spin class with the mob wife and the final discovery of other bodies when trying to cover for her own crimes. The black comedy really landed for me and I laughed out loud at many absurd plot points. You do have to roll with the premise to appreciate the book. I really enjoyed Finlay Donovan is Killing It.
